Suddenly sluggish

magicdotMar 29, 1:22am
..suddenly my vista system has gotten sluggish. ..it never used to be. ..actually. ..since I installed SP1, its gotten quirky in some ways. ..its hard to explain. ..it just doesn't seem as responsive as it once was. ..like when I open control panel, the throbber bar creeps along the top and takes forever to load the panel. ..it never used to be this way.. in fact. ..opening any sort of window is slow any more. ..got any tips? advice? (other then running another OS?)

[edit]: ..and I keep hearing the "click" sound. ..according to the sound options this is supposed to happen when explorer "starts navigation". wtf is that about? ..I'm not using IE, so I'm guessing its something to do w/ the system.. ..but I'm not doing anything. I've only got FF open, and a yahoo chat window.

[edit..again]: ..well. ..there obviously is something wrong because in the Event Viewer the Task Category is full of "system performance monitoring" warnings and errors. wtf? ..its got a problem w/ just about everything I run. Firefox, avast, etc. ..and its got a bunch of errors which, in my less than technical eyes, make no sense. ..of course the "view error report" online sends you to M$'s own site which, of course, has no information on said errors or warnings..

..all in all, I wasn't upset w/ Vista. ..but suddenly its taken on its own, very much Windows, beast-like personality.

Hmm vista the worlds new default operating system... there are plenty of threads "discussing" the merits and pitfalls of vista. The web is bursting at the seams with vista tech stuff. Give it a little time to gain familiarity etc before making any hasty decisions.
Why the windows OS death grip? Out of curiosity to learn more about pc
operating systems and advice from Nerds ... Decided I'd give Linux/Ubuntu a try, dual boot set up (Vista+Ubuntu) and its been a lot of fun so far so much in fact that I rarely play around with vista anymore.
I am not a "FanBoy" but in my opinion Linux/Ubuntu provides a superior operating system and user experience. Not that I am any sort of authority or anything.

I don't have a death grip on Windows. ..I've got linux loaded on a thumb drive which I play with.. ..I'm not not ready to switch completely over. I grew up on DOS so even Windows somewhat makes sense. I ran linux on an older laptop and it was interesting. After many apt-gets I think I was able to surf the web and view most media. ..and there lies the problem. ..at least w/ Windows, I can sorta poke around and figure things out. ..somewhat. ..sometimes.

One downfall would be on some of the newer hardware... the updated codecs that would come out would most likely only be for Vista. Meaning that you might have to wait several months before you can use a video/sound card or even your wireless connection to have the latest codec for your operating system.

I have the latest Ubuntu and there is conflicting problems with my hardware on my new laptop. It's a good thing I also set up a dual boot.

The new Ubuntu comes out in a matter of days, I'm sure the problems will be fixed then.

Removing Norton seems to have fixed more than half the problems for most folks I know that were experiencing the unpleasantness of Vista.

I myself like xp for using freeware, it handles where Vista would definitely fail.

I don't run any software that isn't freeware. I haven't had any problems w/ Vista running anything. At least, anything I've asked it to run. But the system has just gotten flaky. ..it seems to respond to a reboot. ..but.. ..a reboot isn't always an option w/o a big hassle.

My hardware isn't anything exotic or that cutting edge. I may try repartitioning and trying ubuntu.

However..
..anyone have any inside knowledge of these warnings and such in Event Viewer?

That's where Vista fails, It is too focused on the security of any unregistered trademark applications, which totally makes sense that it would cause it to go into a panic, because someone other than Vista is in control of how your machine is being used.
