| Sponsor | PinGUY | Dec 22, 2007 2:01pm | I'm a full time Ubuntu 7.10 user now, it does take a bit of time setting up and to learn but the end results are well worth it.
I can do everything I could do in XP with Linux and as most of my software I used was open source there where Linux versions of them, plus there are a lot of great programs that are Linux only like Amarok, but if there is still a program that you need to use and can't find it for Linux give this site ago linuxappfinder.com [linuxappfinder.com] you can find many windows alternative there or you could try to install the windows program using wine and wine-doors.
Linux's is also super fast even with all the fancy effects turned on, shutting down and rebooting is super quick too.
Linux is so much easier to use now then it used to be, all of my hardware works straight away, even my cheap webcam that I use for IM, I can logon and use my cam with MSN and Yahoo message using Kopete.
This guide helped me out a lot then I was first started using Ubuntu.

But you can skip a lot of the steps by just using Automatix and Envy.
and this guide help me out with changing the look of Ubuntu as I hate the colour of the theme they use.
howtoforge.com/mac4lin_make_linux_look_like_a_mac [howtoforge.com/mac4lin_make_linux_look_like_a_mac]
But the whole site has some great how-to's.
Heres a great site to find software in .deb
getdeb.net [getdeb.net]
as all you need to do to install .deb in Ubuntu is double click on it.
And this is a great tool called CNR Client that allows you to install software from there site cnr.com [cnr.com] by just clicking on the install link.
you can grab the CNR Client .deb here

Linux is well worth a try now, just spend a couple of hours one weekend when your are free installing Ubuntu or any other distro and follow a couple of how-to's to get yourself familiar with the OS and how it works. Once you know your way round and how to do things in Linux you will never go back to windows.
Heres a couple of screen shots of my desktop to give you an idea of how it could look, as I thought that all linux OS's looked cartoony and from the 90's.

But yeah vista sucks, I went out and got it when it fist came out, its now in a back of my draw getting dusty :D
I came across this today that was a pretty good read, on why all Vista users should upgrade to XP SP3.

| Henry12345 | Dec 29, 2007 8:56am | Yeah, pinGUY, thats a beautiful desktop, I definitely prefer Linux and its customization value over xp. But the main reason I won't install Linux is because I'm too lazy. My usb wireless reciever isn't fully compatible with Ubuntu, and I'm too lazy to either buy a compatible one or to make it work on there. It's also not easy for beginners. I've installed both Ubuntu and Mandriva before (Mandriva worked out of the box with my wireless adapter) but couldn't stick with Ubuntu because of the wireless, and I was having trouble installing stuff on Mandriva.
So, maybe I'll try another distro soon, your post kinda encouraged me :), thanks. |

| Henry12345 | Dec 31, 2007 2:25pm | Wow, thanks pinGUY! I don't think that'll fit on a cd though, and I don't have any dvd's readily available, so I'll just download the smaller live cd from the Ubuntu site.
And as for my wireless usb stick (it's a wusb54gc), I finally found a fix that looks easy and workable.
However, I don't want to wipe my existing Windows partition...not quite yet anyway ;). I still do run some games (rarely), and I plan on buying Tabula Rasa soon. So I'm still gonna need that Windows partition for sure.
Hopefully, I can just resize my Windows partition and install Ubuntu on another. Disk space is definitely not a problem, though, since I'm using only 40GB of my 230GB drive...
*edit* - Just found a really useful site about partitions; this is gonna help ALOT. Link here
*edit again* - Hmmm, that didn't work real good. But I'm not backing down yet; I've made a New Year's resolution to install linux. Maybe not Ubuntu, I might try Mandriva again...or see what else works with this card... |
